Jim Kenney: Release the Block Captain List!

Litter.jpg

Imagine if Philly held thousands of elections for hyper-local seats like committeepeople or board of elections, but then refused to let anybody know who won.

This is exactly the problem with Philadelphia's block captain program.

While they aren't on the ballot on Election Day, block captains are elected by their neighbors (via petition) to coordinate block clean-ups, and sometimes other activities and initiatives depending on how active they want to be.

If you have a really motivated self-starter for a block captain, chances are you know who this person is. But if you don't, then you're totally out of luck because the Streets Department refuses to release the list of block captains.

That needs to change.

Sign the petition to tell Jim Kenney to stop frustrating local community organizing, and release the block captain list to local civics.

Are block captains in their positions for life? How are elections held if more than one person has a petition full of signatures? What happens when a single address has signed more than one petition? This system is wonky and perhaps a patronage system, At least post the rules and regulations.

We should be able to know who represents our blocks as Block Captains, so we can work together on issues. Maybe that’s why we don’t hear from them because they need assistance.
