Jim Kenney: Release the Block Captain List!

Litter.jpg

Imagine if Philly held thousands of elections for hyper-local seats like committeepeople or board of elections, but then refused to let anybody know who won.

This is exactly the problem with Philadelphia's block captain program.

While they aren't on the ballot on Election Day, block captains are elected by their neighbors (via petition) to coordinate block clean-ups, and sometimes other activities and initiatives depending on how active they want to be.

If you have a really motivated self-starter for a block captain, chances are you know who this person is. But if you don't, then you're totally out of luck because the Streets Department refuses to release the list of block captains.

That needs to change.

Sign the petition to tell Jim Kenney to stop frustrating local community organizing, and release the block captain list to local civics.

Who is ACTUALLY being protected here? This is pathetic and worth forcing the issue. Heaven forbid someone might want to contact a captain to try to volunteer.

As president of my lical civic association, LoMo, I am particularly interested as block captains are an asset to the community. Secrecy hinders growth and progress.

Why is this secret? What could POSSIBLY be a problem with being a Block Captain and actually being asked by someone on your block – or on the next block! – to give your assistance?!
